PropTech innovation helps Birmingham buildings cut energy costs by nearly £200,000 amid crisis

19th January 2023, Birmingham: UK PropTech company, Demand Logic, has helped four Birmingham prime commercial properties save just under a combined £200,000 in energy bills in under two years. The collective properties of leading real estate organisations Hines, Avison Young, Oval Real Estate and Ashdown Phillips and Partners, which span a total 775,000 sq ft of space across the city, use Demand Logic’s Building Analytics technology to save energy, improve equipment performance and provide detailed insight into their buildings.

Since 2020, Demand Logic has worked with Hines and Avison Young to identify energy savings of around £60,000 at 3 Brindleyplace, approximately £70,000 at 4 Brindleyplace and £5,000 at 9 Brindleyplace. The prominent office building No 1 Colmore Square, an Oval Real Estate property, has also seen savings of £50,000 through the use of Demand Logic. The organisation has now deployed their technology at 6 Brindleyplace and Arca (previously St Philips Point) is already in the process of analysing data, from over 6,000 data points.

Birmingham has an ambitious Smart City Roadmap and the city council’s Big City Plan is planning to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2026. In recent years, Birmingham has become known for its innovative redevelopment projects and thriving tech sector. In addition, the council’s leader, Cllr Ian Ward recently backed calls for Birmingham to become a new tech centre and invest in new innovation with the city now home to 3,000 new economy firms.

Mike Darby, CEO of Demand Logic, said:

“Despite UK PropTech companies often being very London-centric, we’ve recently been seeing more activity across the UK and in particular in the West Midlands. Birmingham has lots of exciting Real Estate activity, giving us a chance to provide teams with the tools to unlock the power of their data. We’re looking forward to continuing our work across the city and building new partnerships with some of the leading players in the built environment.”

Jonathan Aspinall, Director, Avison Young:

"Avison Young are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve the efficiency of our managed buildings. We are delighted with the results following the implementation of Demand Logic at Brindleyplace which has exceeded expectations."
